delicious food

A bustling metropolis with nearly two million people, Auckland has some of the best and most varied food in the Pacific region. In fact, it’s not hard at all to find a good meal in the city—the hard part is deciding where to go. Auckland boasts a number of incredible restaurants and eateries that are esteemed by both natives and tourists alike.

Looking to plan your trip to this one-of-a-kind city? In this guide, we’ll tell you some of our favorite spots (from bistros to upscale dining) so that you can experience the best of Auckland on your vacation.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Euro Bar & Restaurant

This local eatery has everything you’re looking for in your next Auckland visit. Euro Bar & Restaurant is headed by the eminent chef Gareth Stewart, a British chef bringing the best of UK flavor to the waterfronts of New Zealand. Euro Bar & Restaurant offers a sophisticated atmosphere.

2. 1947 Eatery

Famed for its authentic Indian cuisine, the 1947 Eatery is nestled among the high-rises on Federal Street, making it hard to notice upon first glance. This truly local establishment consistently ranks as one of the top spots in Auckland for both natives and tourists alike. Menu items such as fried chicken lollipops and tandoor-grilled meats are fan favorites. Personally, we love the cocktails here (be sure to try “Lady in Pink”) and the incredible chic ambiance that balances casual dining with a more upscale flair.

Don’t leave without trying the bang-bang butter chicken, one of the restaurant’s signature curry dishes that will leave you craving for more!

3. The Groove

Want to dine upscale? There’s no better place to do so than The Grove. This high-class restaurant boasts elegant contemporary cuisine from the region infused with a delectable French flair. We recommend dressing up—the atmosphere here is pretty sophisticated.

The prices at The Grove aren’t cheap, but no penny is wasted on a meal at this fine establishment. The Grove offers an array of vegetarian options for the non-meat-eaters out there. Be sure to try the tuna tartare while you’re there!

4. Masu by Nic Watt

Auckland’s best location for casual Japanese dining, Masu by Nic Watt combines the elegance of professional cuisine with the ambiance of a day-to-day restaurant. The restaurant’s robata (or fireside) specialties and great drink options make this one of our personal favorites. Masu by Nic Watt offers a world-class sushi bar, along with a smorgasbord of entrees like ika no kara age (fried squid with green chili and lime) and buta kimchi gyoza (pork and kimchi gyoza with soy vinegar and pickled cucumber).

But don’t stop there! We recommend trying out some of the restaurant’s authentic Japanese desserts. We’re sure you’ll love choko no pudyingu (cedar-roasted chocolate and hazelnut pudding with umeshu ice cream) as much as we do!

5. Cassia

Located in Fort Lane, Cassia offers a wonderful blend of the modern and the traditional with contemporary Indian cuisine guaranteed to charm your tastebuds. Cassia was founded by Chef Sid Sahrawat and his wife Chand Sahrawat. The restaurant uses fresh New Zealand ingredients to bring alive classic Indian dishes with world-renowned flavor.

Priced in the mid-range, Cassia boasts a wide array of menu options. We recommend trying the restaurant’s signature lamb kebab. Vegetarian? Try the smoked mushrooms with green chili cream and truffle oil.

6. Blue Breeze Inn

Blue Breeze Inn is one of Auckland’s best restaurants that offers patrons a taste of modern Chinese food you simply can’t get anywhere else in Auckland. Started by Che Barrington, renowned chef celebrated for his groundbreaking modern Thai restaurant MooChowChow, Blue Breeze Inn boasts an incredible array of traditional, high-class Chinese cuisine.

The best part? These delectable dishes are offered to patrons at low prices. Even those on a budget can enjoy fine dining at this one-of-a-kind establishment. For the penny pinchers out there, we recommend trying the smacked cucumbers in garlic sauce. If you’re looking for a more high-dollar option, however, you can’t go wrong with the Chinese Roasted Duck.

7. Apero

Hailing from France, Apero’s founders and chefs bring a unique array of French cuisine to the Auckland area. The food here is reasonably-priced and rich in diversity—and that’s just the beginning of the praise we have for Apero. The restaurant, which maintains an honest, health-centric atmosphere, also offers some of the best wine in town. You can bet any visit to Apero will guarantee a good time.

So where should you start? We recommend trying the roasted savoy cabbage, a savory meal that comes with parmesan and walnuts. Make sure to top it off with some of the fine wine from the Apero cellar.

8. Vivace

In the mood for something fancy? You can’t go wrong with Vivace. A time-honored establishment that has treated New Zealanders and tourists alike for over three decades, Vivace uses the freshest Mediterranean ingredients to craft meals that are unique and savory. What’s more, the restaurant offers fresh wines that are sure to elevate any dining experience.

Can’t decide what to eat from this award-winning restaurant? We love the spiced lamb and goat cheese empanadas ourselves.

9. The Sugar Club

Located in the famous Sky Tower, The Sugar Club offers a unique dining experience. Food here is served artistically and elegantly, with a classy atmosphere. The highest restaurant in Auckland, The Sugar Club is also the winner of the 2020 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award.

In addition to the food (we recommend the incredible duck breast), the restaurant offers guests a fantastic view of Auckland from fifty-three stories in the air. Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience while you’re in the city!

10. Prego

Since 1986, Prego has offered the people of New Zealand some of the best Italian food in the region. If you’re in the mood for something authentic, make sure to stop by this establishment, which offers a bistro-style interior, bar, and courtyard for its patrons.

In addition to delicious Italian entrees, the restaurant also offers an array of pizza options that are perfect for families, as well as desserts and wines that are sure to make anyone happy. Vegan? No problem! Prego even offers an entire vegan menu for clients who follow the lifestyle.

The Bottom Line

Looking for somewhere good to eat on your next trip to Auckland? We’ve got you covered! From modern Chinese to Indian favorites, we go over an incredible range of culinary treasures located within the Auckland city limits. With the options on this list, you’ll be able to eat at a wide array of savory restaurants. Make sure to use this as your go-to reference for your upcoming outing!

Lake Tekapo: A Kiwi Adventure Like No Other

0

Lake Tekapo boasts all the essentials for an unforgettable vacation – exquisite hotels, delectable dining options, and plenty of exciting activities to keep you entertained. Coupled with its breathtaking scenery, it’s undeniably one of the most picturesque destinations in New Zealand.

Despite its small size, Lake Tekapo offers a plethora of attractions. With a population just over 500, it’s a favoured stop on the journey between Christchurch and Queenstown.

Over the years, Lake Tekapo’s beauty has only grown, drawing visitors with its stunning visitors. Consequently, an array of activities has emerged, catering to every taste. Among my personal favourites are stargazing from the hot pools within one of the few Dark Sky Reserves in New Zealand and capturing the beauty of the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd.

From adrenaline-pumping adventures to romantic escapades and breathtaking aerial views, Lake Tekapo offers something for everyone. In this post, I outline some of the best activities in Lake Tekapo, providing a comprehensive guide to ensure an unforgettable visit to this enchanting destination!

About Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is positioned right in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island, nestled on the eastern flank of the Southern Alps. Conveniently situated, it’s just a one-hour drive from Mount Cook Village and approximately three hours from the bustling town of Queenstown.

Tekapo town is nestled beside New Zealand’s famously azure lake, renowned for its striking blue hue. Despite its small  local community, Tekapo draws a significant influx of visitors, firmly establishing itself as one of NZ’s top lake destinations.

In Tekapo, you’ll discover a variety of dining options ranging from cosy cafes to charming restaurants. Additionally, there’s a convenient small supermarket, excellent hotels, and even a local hot spring. With such offerings, it’s no surprise that Lake Tekapo is frequently lauded as one of New Zealand’s premier destinations for romantic getaways!

Things to do in Lake Tekapo, New Zealand

1. Visit Tekapo Springs

At Tekapo Springs, you can immerse yourself in three distinct hot pools, each named after and moulded to represent popular locales in the area. Beginning with Ohau, set at a comfortable 36.5°C (97.5°F), followed by Pukaki at 37.5°C (99.5°F), and finally, Tekapo, exclusively for adults, at a luxurious 38°C (100.4°F).

For families, there’s also an Aqua Play Area featuring two cooler pools ideal for children. Personally, I found solace in their steam and sauna room before braving a (brief!) dip in the invigorating cold plunge pool. Tekapo Springs truly offers an idyllic setting for a couple of hours of relaxation.

Let’s not overlook the panoramic views of Lake Tekapo and the majestic surrounding mountains, visible from every corner of the springs. Additionally, there’s a day spa on-site offering a variety of treatments, from facials to massages, delivered by the exceptionally friendly staff.

Tekapo Springs welcomes guests from 11 am to 7 pm Monday through Friday, with an hour earlier opening time on weekends. For an extraordinary experience, I’d suggest visiting after nightfall. While you may miss the picturesque lake views, you’ll have the opportunity to gaze up and marvel at the stars.

Entrance to the pools and Aqua Play area is priced at $37 NZD per adult (16+), with discounted rates offered for children and families. Additionally, you have the option to include access to the steam room, sauna, and plunge pool for an additional $10 NZD per person.

2. Go Star Gazing

Lake Tekapo’s renowned night sky is truly extraordinary, offering an unparalleled opportunity to marvel at the stars and the celestial wonders above. This region stands as one of the selected Dark Sky Reserves in New Zealand and holds the distinction of being the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, known officially as the Aoraki/Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

Therefore, Tekapo undoubtedly ranks among the premier destinations for stargazing in New Zealand!

Moreover, Tekapo is home to the Mount John Observatory, where a captivating 2-hour mountaintop stargazing experience awaits. Operated by the University of Canterbury, this observatory provides the perfect setting to delve into the science and captivating narratives of the night sky, guided by charming and knowledgeable experts.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed about this tour was the utilisation of their 16″ optical telescope, rendering the stars brilliantly clear! In the event of inclement weather, you’ll be comfortably sheltered indoors, yet still able to utilise their instruments for an awe-inspiring glimpse of the night sky.

Due to the high demand for the Mount John Observatory experience, it’s crucial to secure your tickets well in advance. Tickets are priced at approx $190 NZD per person.

Stargazing—it’s undeniably one of the top activities in Lake Tekapo!

3. Capture images of the Church of the Good Shepherd

This charming little church holds a special place in my heart as one of the South Island’s most picturesque spots. The Church of the Good Shepherd boasts a stunning setting against the backdrop of Lake Tekapo, with Mount Cook visible on clear days. It’s no wonder this church is a favourite among tourists.

For the best photo opportunities, my recommendation is to visit early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowds. If possible, catching a sunrise or sunset, or even arriving after dark, offers the most magical moments for photography.

Keep in mind that photography inside the church is not permitted, and as it’s a place of worship, it’s important to be respectful. In favourable weather conditions, it also serves as a fantastic location for stargazing at night.

4. Visit Lake Alexandrina

Regarded as a well-kept secret among Tekapo locals, Lake Alexandrina lies approximately 12 kilometres (7.4 miles) from the town centre, nestled in the high country. Fed by springs, the lake boasts breathtaking scenery in every direction.

For enthusiasts of high-country fishing, Lake Alexandrina is a paradise, teeming with brown trout and salmon. With a maximum depth of 27 metres (89 ft), it’s ideal for fly-fishing. Additionally, the absence of motorised boats creates a serene atmosphere, perfect for a tranquil day or weekend of fishing.

Overnight stays are possible at the Lake Alexandrina Campground, situated right on the lake’s shores. While basic, the campground, managed by the Department of Conservation, offers a long-drop toilet facility. However, there are no showers or running water amenities available.

The campground fee is approximately $20 NZD per vehicle per night, payable at the entrance box. Nearby, Lake McGregor also has a campground managed by the DOC.

5. Go for a Coffee at Jack Rabbit

Located at the northern edge of the lake along Neil Anderson Way, one of my personal favourites is Jack Rabbit. The café features a spacious outdoor patio offering picturesque views of the lake. Serving top-notch coffee, delicious breakfast and lunch options, as well as delectable items from the cabinet, including mouthwatering pies, Jack Rabbit is a culinary gem.

It’s the perfect spot to recharge after enjoying the plethora of fantastic activities Tekapo has to offer. Jack Rabbit welcomes guests daily from 7:30 am to 4 pm, but it’s wise to arrive early to have your choice of their delightful pastries!

6. Hike Mount John Summit

Described as a moderately challenging hike, the Mount John Summit Hike is conveniently accessible directly from Tekapo town. The trail commences just before Tekapo Springs and is clearly signposted. There are two routes to reach the summit, with the quickest being the circuit track, which ascends steeply through predominantly forested terrain. It’s advisable to allocate approximately 1.5 hours to complete the circuit track.

Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views of the Mackenzie Basin and Lake Tekapo. Additionally, you’ll find the renowned Astro Cafe, a viewing platform, and the Mount John Star Gazing Observatory

From adventures on the water to stargazing in the clear skies above. With so much to explore, it’s no surprise that Lake Tekapo is a must-visit destination in New Zealand.

I hope this guide has sparked inspiration for your upcoming journey.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Picking Real Christmas Trees:

Q: When is the best time to pick a real Christmas tree?

A: The ideal time to pick a real Christmas tree is typically in early December. However, it can vary depending on personal preferences and the tree’s freshness. Some tree farms offer the option to tag your tree in advance.

Q: How do I know if a Christmas tree is fresh?

A: Check for vibrant green needles that are firmly attached to the branches. Give the tree a gentle shake; if only a few needles fall off, it’s likely fresh. Also, a fresh tree should have a fragrant, pine-like smell.

Q: Can I bring my own tools to cut down the tree myself?

A: Most Christmas tree farms provide the necessary tools for cutting down your tree. Bringing your own tools may not be necessary, but it’s always a good idea to check with the specific tree farm.

Q: What is tree tagging, and how does it work?

A: Tree tagging is a service offered by some Christmas tree farms that allows you to select and reserve a tree before cutting it down. This is especially useful if you want to ensure you get the perfect tree and plan to return later for pickup.

Q: How should I care for my real Christmas tree once I bring it home?

A: To keep your tree fresh, place it in water as soon as possible. Make a fresh cut at the base to help the tree absorb water. Keep the tree hydrated by regularly watering it and placing it away from heat sources.

Q: Can I recycle my real Christmas tree after the holidays?

A: Many communities offer Christmas tree recycling programs. Check with your local waste management or environmental services to find out the options available in your area.

Q: Are there any safety considerations when picking a real Christmas tree?

A: Ensure the tree is secured properly on your vehicle for the journey home. When setting it up indoors, keep it away from heat sources, such as fireplaces and radiators, to prevent drying out and potential fire hazards.

What is Black Friday?

Contrary to stories some time ago, “Black Friday” did not relate to business losses or financial calamities. Originally, factory managers in the 1950s first started referring to the Friday after Thanksgiving as Black Friday because most of their workers extend their holiday weekend by falsely calling in sick. However, the name Black Friday didn’t become prominent until about 10 years later when the Philadelphia traffic cops used it.

The day after Thanksgiving traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. For the Philadelphia traffic cops, it meant hours of dealing with chaos resulting from the influx of large numbers of suburban tourists coming into the city to start their holiday shopping. Coincidentally, the Annual Army-Navy football game was held the Saturday after Friday. As a result, a huge crowd always creates a headache for the police.

To meet the rising challenge posed by the visitors, the traffic cops needed to work 12-hour shifts in the traffic. They also needed to deal with accidents, traffic jams, and shoplifting. As a result, they began to use the phrase “Black Friday” to describe the chaos that ensued from the day.

Over time, merchants in the city decided to ride on the name wave by calling it “Black Friday.” Regardless of the reason for the name, today, Black Friday simply relates to the holiday shopping period for finding the best deals.

Black Friday 2023 – when is it?

Black Friday does not fall on the same day every year. But a good way to track it is to target the Friday following Thanksgiving in the United States. With that said, this year’s Black Friday is on Friday 24th November 2023.

Black Friday is not a public holiday in New Zealand. However, since it falls during the weekend, retailers have successfully leveraged it to offer steep discounts to increase sales. Although New Zealanders do not celebrate American Thanksgiving, Black Friday still holds the day after Thanksgiving as it does in other parts of the world.

It is not uncommon for Black Friday sales to start a week or days before the official date. Although the best offers run from Friday to Monday, online and physical stores offer Pre-Black Friday promotions for interested parties. As a result, it is better to keep your eyes peeled for such deals.

Black Friday sales will start on Friday, November 24, and end on Monday, November 27, Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is held immediately after Black Friday and allows a spillover of buying and selling. Although it started as a separate shopping date, it is now combined with Black Friday, so shoppers that missed the Black Friday sale can take advantage of the equally-big shopping event. We’ll tell you more about Cyber Monday in the coming paragraphs.

Where can you find the best Black Friday deals?

Now, to one of the best parts – where to shop for black Friday. Most traditional stores will offer Black Friday deals. In other words, regardless of their sizes, retail stores do their best to offer sales promotions on Black Friday. However, not all of them are promising. But we’ll help you hunt down the best that are worthy of your attention.

You’ll find the best Black Friday sale on big-name retailers like Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc. However, one of the problems with buying from overseas retailers is the logistics involved in transportation and return.

For example, in July last year, Amazon Australia only started shipping to New Zealand. As a result, Kiwis could not take advantage of their Black Friday deals last year. Despite that, Amazon Australia still does not carry everything. The online retailer does not ship its Echo smart speakers and smart displays to New Zealand; you can’t buy MacBooks and iPhones from the store.

This is an example of the many logistics problems involved with buying from an overseas retail shop. Instead, you can check out New Zealand stores that offer equal Black Friday deals.

We’ve found Mighty Ape and TheMarket to be two of the best places to shop for Black Friday deals in New Zealand. Mighty Ape is an online retailing company founded and operated in New Zealand, and TheMarket is also a New Zealand-based online shopping destination. Check out some of their best Black Friday deals without worrying about paying unnecessary shipping fees and associated delays.

Tips for finding the best Black Friday deals

Finding the best Black Friday sale depends on how much research you do in the times leading up to November 25. But we understand that not knowing what to do could be overwhelming. Therefore, let us show you a few shopping tips to get the best out of the sale.

Create a list

Remember how they say proper preparation prevents poor performance? Well, it applies to shopping for hot Black Friday deals. Doing your homework ahead of Black Friday will save you a lot of stress, time, and money. Why? Because you already know what you want and won’t waste time checking out unrelated deals. For example, if you want to buy a laptop model, include in your list the features, specs, and price range you want. Then, you can go straight to the section without just winging it.

One of the advantages of creating a list is that it allows you to start earlier than most. As we mentioned, some online stores will kick off their sales in the days leading to Black Friday. Therefore, if you already have a list of what to buy, you could add hot products to your cart when you shop online or pre-order them if it works for you.

Set a budget

The next task is planning how you won’t spend more than you should. Have you ever wondered why retail stores sell at discounts during Black Friday and still end up with profits? It’s simple; people buy more at low prices than they should. In the excitement, they overspend. If you don’t want to fall into this obvious trap, decide how much you can afford to spend on Black Friday deals.

After creating a list of items, you wish to buy, put them together and calculate the maximum amount you can afford to spend. The best way to do this is to check the prices before Black Friday. Since the prices will be lower, you can understand how to budget your money.

Choose online shopping over in-store sales

Online shopping is fast and convenient. True, an in-store can offer mouth-watering promotions and great deals. However, you must always prioritize timing regarding Black Friday deals. Since hot deals sell out faster, it is better to avoid spending time in transit and long queues when you can simply order online from home. Plus, online shopping offers more free delivery offers and curbside pickups.

Now, if you are one of the bargain hunters looking for all the latest deals, do the following if you’re shopping online:

  • Use websites and apps to judge the best deals
  • Checkout the social media accounts of your favourite retailers to know about exclusive deals and promotions
  • Use loyalty programs to access discount codes, coupons, and promotions.
  • Set up your online accounts ahead of Black Friday
  • Check your account details for correctness
  • Check the store policy ahead of time

Lookout for the return policy

Most stores offer refunds for damaged or unsatisfactory purchases. However, not all shops do. One of the advantages of shopping in a physical store is that you can examine the product before buying. As a result, the possibility of returning the goods is significantly lower. However, buying from an online store is a little more complicated.

Most online stores allow you to cancel your orders 14 days from the delivery and another 14 days to return them for a refund. However, will this be possible if the products take 30 days to reach you? In other words, check the product delivery date to ensure you get it in time to check for damages and faults.

Also, check their refund policy to ascertain who would pay the cost of sending it back for a refund.

Remember Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday is almost as big as Black Friday. Therefore, you don’t need to spend money on unnecessary or unsatisfactory purchases. If you don’t get the product you wanted on Black Friday, save your money for the Monday deals.

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday – what’s the difference?

We’ve thrown around the term Cyber Monday a couple of times already, and we feel it deserves a section of its own. Let us tell you the differences to help you decide which of the two biggest shopping days of the year is best for you.

Black Friday is the best time to buy newer, bigger ticket items. In contrast, Cyber Monday is a better day to shop for tech deals.

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday – 3 days after Black Friday. Unlike a Black Friday sale available online and in-store, Cyber Monday mostly involves incredible deals online, and tech products are more discounted than other items.

Can a store run out of products during black Friday 2023?

Yes, most stores will run out of products just a few hours into their official Black Friday sales for many reasons. The chief among them is that you’re not the only one targeting whatever product you want to buy, and the store can only offer so much.

As mentioned above, certain items outpace others. For example, sports and outdoor products, Apple devices, computers and accessories, etc. According to stock data obtained from PriceSpy, 73% of items monitored under the ‘computers and accessories’ category were listed as ‘out of stock’ before last year’s black Friday.

Apart from the large number of people wanting to buy the products, shoppers have revealed they are adapting their shopping habits to pre-ordering. Almost 1/3 of the survey respondents observed by PriceSpy say they purchase more goods as a ‘pre-order.’

Therefore, early shoppers and disproportional demand and supply will cause some goods to run out of stock. However, this does not apply to all items. Regardless of the buying pressure, some items will still be available for sale. However, we recommend you check them out early enough.

Frequently asked questions

Are Black Friday deals real?

Black Friday sales are the real deal. However, consumers must be wary of certain retailer tactics. For example, we know that because they’re offering a deal at a discount does not always mean they’re losing and you’re winning. It is not uncommon for retailers to hike their prices before the Black Friday sales period only to reduce them a bit to make them seem better than they are. This is another reason why we recommend you check out all the latest deals before the Black Friday sales so you can identify fake and incredible bargains down the line.

What should I avoid buying on Black Friday?

Don’t buy things just because they are on sale is our best way to tell you which items to avoid buying on Black Friday. The last thing you want to do is to overspend, even if they are on gifts. If you don’t or the recipient doesn’t need it, don’t buy it. Therefore, make a list of what you want to buy before the big day to know which deals to avoid.

What is the busiest time on Black Friday?

According to foot traffic data analysis carried out by google, traffic is heaviest in the afternoon and lowest between 2 am and 6 am. The crowds start picking up around 8 am and peak between 2 pm and 4 pm. Therefore, if you plan to shop in a physical store, avoid shopping during these periods if you want to avoid the crowd.

Conclusion

Black Friday is an opportunity to buy Christmas presents, boxing day presents, and a great range of tech items from your favourite brands. Take advantage of the latest deals straight from Kiwi brands and avoid unnecessary costs this Black Friday.

Cremation gaining popularity in New Zealand due to affordability and cultural shifts

0
urn

The practice of cremation is becoming the standard choice for many Kiwis and for good reason. Cremation has been overtaking traditional burials in many countries due to its countless comparative benefits. This rising trend can be attributed to a combination of factors, namely the affordability, changing cultural biases and a growing emphasis on environmental considerations.

Why is cremation considered preferable?

Cremation is much more preferable to burial for a few reasons. The main reason being the affordability, as cremations can be as low as 525 NZD through council owned crematoriums. Compare this figure to the quoted burial average of 10,000 NZD and it’s easy to see why many New Zealanders would be in favour of this.

Cremation and its following accessories such as cremation urns, scattering tubes and cremation jewellery are also priced much more favourably when compared to traditional burial costs. With all costs considered, it is entirely feasible to provide an end of life service for about one tenth the cost of a traditional burial.

Cremations are also more flexible in terms of what one can do with their final goodbyes. Burials are limited as once the ceremony is over, all you have left is a grave to visit. With cremation, many have taken to scattering the ashes in their loved ones favourite place in life. Others prefer to keep the ashes in an urn or have them put in cremation jewellery. Cremation jewellery are pieces of jewellery designed to hold a small amount of ashes of the deceased. This allows one to carry their loved ones with them every day. There are even some highly creative options such as putting the ashes in tattoo ink for a sense of permanency, or having the ashes smelted into beautifully unique glasswork. Options like these are not so available for traditional burials.

When it comes to the grieving process, cremation may also have some strong benefits. Urns are growing in demand due to the rise of popularity of cremations for New Zealanders. Urns are great for grief as they provide people a place to remember their loved ones, and allow one to grieve them in the comfort of their own home. Travelling to a cemetery plot can now be a thing of the past.

Changing cultural beliefs

The country of New Zealand has always been an open country with many migrants making their way in to live and work happily. With more and more people of varying different cultures, beliefs, religions and languages, the cultural melting pot that is New Zealand has shifted throughout the years. This has been attributed to the rise of cremation popularity as an end of life choice for many Kiwis as their culture has shifted away from traditional burials.

Another big reason as to why cremations are more preferred in New Zealand’s modern cultural sphere is due to its ecological benefits. Cremation is a much more greener practice than burials as it does not take up valuable land space in perpetuity. It requires fewer natural resources to conduct compared to a traditional land burial so is the perfect option for the ecologically minded Kiwi.

According to the Cremation Society, New Zealand has a cremation rate of 78%. While there is still certainly a place for traditional burials, cremations are becoming the standard choice for many of the above reasons.

The vast benefits of cremation in comparison to traditional burials makes it easy to see why it has become so popular in New Zealand. From its economical advantages to its great eco-friendliness, cremation is quickly becoming the standard option for end of life care.
