A Brief History of Smith and Caugheys, Auckland’s Most Loved Department Store
Marianne Smith (nee Caughey) established her own drapery and millinery business in 1880, demonstrating great courage and enterprise for the time. Marianne’s store was a success due to her vision of providing quality merchandise at a good price and with impeccable service to the early pioneers of Auckland and beyond.
As a result of Marianne’s success and the business’s increasing prosperity, her husband and fellow draper William Henry Smith joined her in 1881. In October 1882, Marianne’s brother Andrew Clarke Caughey also joined the couple and Smith & Caughey, Drapers and Clothiers was formed. Smith & Caughey’s has flourished as New Zealand’s premier shopping institution because of its commitment to providing a memorable customer experience, a sense of intimacy, and high-quality goods.
It remains one of New Zealand’s most well-loved department stores, renowned for its attention to detail and personal approach.
