The Menu

Menus feature Kiwi classics made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients. A light-as-air goat’s cheese soufflé is served alongside pork belly with poached rhubarb and steak frites with house butter. There is a great selection of New Zealand wines at a very reasonable price. And don’t even think about skipping dessert – a delightful dessert — fried balls of doughy, cinnamony, sugary goodness dipped into thick chocolate is simply to die for!

The Atmosphere

The atmosphere at The Engine Room is cosy and inviting, with exposed brick walls, dark wood furnishings, and flickering candles at every table. There is also a lovely outdoor seating area that is perfect for al fresco dining on those rare warm evenings in Auckland.

Reviews:

  • We ordered: 1) Twice baked goats cheese souffle- this was the dish of the night. I’m not usually a cheese fan but the lightness of the souffle balanced the richness of the cheese perfectly. Definitely a must try.  2) Steak frites- a classic steak with chips and salad. My scotch fillet was cooked perfect medium rare and seasoned well. Chips were crispy and salad well dressed. Portion size was also generous.  3) Duck confit- skin on the duck was crispy and meat tender but slightly over seasoned (too salty).
  • They had me at oysters, natural, yes. King prawn salads won over my companions. Fresh, flavour, delicious. Main course I had the steak frites, perfectly medium rare, melting. Pork schnitzel and baked snapper were gratefully received, and demolished, on the other plates. So much goodness, lovely casual yet upmarket decor and ambience. If you haven’t been, just go. I wish I hadn’t waited so long.
