What To Do And See At Wenderholm Regional Park

Hiking Trails: 

Wenderholm Regional Park has some fantastic hiking trails that are suitable for all fitness levels. The Wenderholm Perimeter Path is a must-do hike. A calm bush path in the stunning Wenderholm Regional Park is best suited for experienced walkers. This stroll around Maungatauhoro, a region full with Mori history and attractive lookout places.

The trail, which consists of a boardwalk, steps, gravel, and grass, is clearly marked. Be ready for uneven track quality, plenty of climbing, some steep portions, and an unformed track on the Waiwera estuary side. Wear sturdy shoes when walking because some of the steep, unformed track sections can be slick.

From the main parking lot, follow the signs and keep an eye out for the red markers.

You’ll pass a pou whenua (carving), which honours the past and symbolises the tangata whenua (people of the land)’s physical and spiritual connection to the area.

The famed Couldrey House and Gardens are passed along the railway. Visit them today to experience a historic homestead that is completely furnished and set in a beautiful garden. The colonial home is often open from noon to four on weekdays (adult admittance is subject to a nominal admission fee).

Also, The lovely Puhoi River mouth is a short, level walk away at Wenderholm, Auckland’s first regional park. This calm stroll is a wonderful way to discover Wenderholm and go a little further from the crowds.

There are no signs directing people on the trek, and there is no established path. From the main parking lot, stroll to the beach, turn north, and take in the view.

Enjoy the stunning coastline views as you go along the long, sandy beach (you may need to cross a few low rocks along the way). Stay away from the strong tidal currents at the mouth of the Puhoi River if the sun is out and you feel like going for a swim.

Public toilets, changing rooms and drinking water are available at the main car park.

Swimming and Water Sports: 

Wenderholm Regional Park offers a range of water-based activities like swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. With its pristine beaches, calm waters, and warm weather, Wenderholm Regional Park is an excellent place to cool off and enjoy the great outdoors. The park’s estuary is also an excellent spot for fishing, and kayaking through the mangroves is an unforgettable experience.

Picnic and BBQ Spots:

Wenderholm Regional Park has numerous picnic and BBQ spots scattered throughout the park. The most popular picnic spot is the Kowhai Glen Picnic Area. This area is situated under large native trees and offers plenty of shade, making it an excellent spot to relax and enjoy a family-friendly picnic.

The park also has two BBQ spots that are available for visitors to use. The BBQs are located near the Kowhai Glen and the Southern End of the park. Remember to bring some charcoal or gas as they are not provided.

Bird Watching:

Wenderholm Regional Park is home to a range of unique bird species, including the endangered New Zealand dotterel. The park’s estuary is also a vital breeding ground for many bird species. If you’re a bird-watching enthusiast, make sure to bring your binoculars, as you’ll likely spot some rare birds.

Facilities:

BBQ – There are 3 electric and 6 wood fired (2 double and 4 single) BBQs are available for casual use. You will need to supply your own wood or charcoal. The electric BBQs are free to operate.

Car park on site – 290 spaces, also contains a 5 minute loading zone. 400 overflow spaces are available, if main car park is full and ground conditions allow.

Mobility parking – There are two designated car parks in the main car park next to the pathway to the main toilet block.

Beach – Wenderholm Regional Park has approximately 900 metres of family friendly beach adjacent to a large grassy picnic areas under the shade of pohutukawa trees.

Boat ramp – The jetty and boat ramp are located on the Puhoi River estuary side of the park. It is not recommended to launch and retrieve boats for 3 hours each side of low tide.
