Morven Callar (2002) – Film Review

0

I finally got around to watching Morvern Caller last night on a friend’s recommendation, gee wiz what a great movie.

I was blown away. I enjoy a good minimalist film so this movie ticked all the boxes for me. I love it when a movie really captures your full attention and makes you feel a strong connection to the actors. While it’s sometimes a little unsettling it can also be totally immersive.

The plot of Morvern Caller is unquestionably peculiar and far out but it was full of surprises and I found myself not being able to stop watching.

For the first 30 minutes of the film I was completely and utterly in awe of the visual escapades I was witnessing. The sound track was powerful and made the film that bit more tense, a reason on it’s own to experience this film. I loved the moment where Morvern walks into her job with head-phones on, listening to Lee Hazlwood. Brilliant.

The director Lynne Ramsay is really incredible. If you ever get a chance check out Rat Catcher it was her first feature film and there are a few of her short films included with the DVD. Her films are just breathtaking.

Storytelling Film Review

0

Three out of five stars
Running time: 82 mins

Todd Solondz’s two previous films were Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness, which were brilliantly observed, skewering portraits of, respectively, the pains of adolescence, and life and relationships in middle class American suburbia.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that when the basic set-up for Storytelling was announced (‘Happiness in high school’), there was a lot of fevered anticipation. Sadly, however, though still an interesting film, it doesn’t live up to expectations.

The film is basically two unrelated stories in one. (Supposedly a third, linking section featuring James Van Der Beek and Heather Matarazzo was filmed, then dropped, resulting in the relatively short running time and the film’s uneven feel – however, no adequate explanation of this has been forthcoming as yet).

The first section, ‘Fiction’, is only about twenty minutes long and centres on Vi (Selma Blair), her relationship with both her cerebral palsy-afflicted boyfriend (Leo Fitzpatrick) and, later, a fling with her fiercely intelligent, black creative writing tutor (Robert Wisdom), which she then uses for the basis of a short story.

The second, longer section, ‘Non-fiction’, centres on Paul Giamatta’s geeky documentary film-maker, who thinks he’s found the perfect subject for his film on American teenage life in dopey slacker Scooby Livingstone (Mark Webber), to the initial resistance of his family (John Goodman and Julie Hagerty).

The resulting film, ‘American Scooby’, includes sly references to both American Beauty (there’s a shot of a plastic bag floating in the wind) and the acclaimed documentary American Movie (whose Mike Schank also has a bit part as Giamatta’s cameraman).

The acting, throughout, is excellent, with Selma Blair giving a mature performance in the first part that suggests better roles await her than those she’s had so far.

There’s also a lot of extremely black humour in the film, particularly in the relationship between the Livingstone’s precocious younger son and their Salvadorean maid (Lupe Olvideros – from Chuck & Buck – excellent as usual).

Solondz’s previous films revealed a particular talent for simultaneously repulsing the audience and making them laugh. In this respect, ‘Fiction’ is the stronger half of the film, though there is nothing to match the power of Happiness. Similarly, the second half starts well, but the characters never really sufficiently engage your attention.

Ultimately, then, knowing that a third section once existed, it’s impossible to watch Storytelling without speculating on what might have been. It’s still worth watching, as the first section is impressive, it has its fair share of dark laughs and there are several individual scenes of interest, but in the end, this will disappoint Solondz fans who, understandably, expected more from his third film.

Whether you’re sat around with a chilly bin watching Netflix or heading for a hike in the wop wops, you could benefit from the curative powers of a chiropractor. Chiropractic work is a safe, natural approach to health care, removing any interference from the nervous system.

Ever seen those videos where people look like they’re having their body parts dislocated? Have you ever heard those large ‘pops’ when a person is receiving treatment? Well, this is all part of the alignment and body-healing process.

Fun fact: The large popping noise you hear is not bones rubbing or parts of the body being dislocated. In fact, it is the perfectly natural and intended sound of re-alignment. When your bones are not sat in their correct pressure, the joints build pressure and fluid. The ‘pop’ is this pressure being released when interlocking bone structures, such as the spinal facet, are placed back in their natural position.

So if you’re looking for a health centre to help balance your central nervous system, then read on!

Auckland boasts a number of incredible restaurants and eateries that are esteemed by both natives and tourists alike.

Looking to plan your trip to this one-of-a-kind city? In this guide, we’ll tell you some of our favorite spots (from bistros to upscale dining) so that you can experience the best of Auckland on your vacation.

Let’s dive right in!

1. Euro Bar & Restaurant

This local eatery has everything you’re looking for in your next Auckland visit. Euro Bar & Restaurant is headed by the eminent chef Gareth Stewart, a British chef bringing the best of UK flavor to the waterfronts of New Zealand. Euro Bar & Restaurant offers a sophisticated atmosphere.

2. 1947 Eatery

Famed for its authentic Indian cuisine, the 1947 Eatery is nestled among the high-rises on Federal Street, making it hard to notice upon first glance. This truly local establishment consistently ranks as one of the top spots in Auckland for both natives and tourists alike. Menu items such as fried chicken lollipops and tandoor-grilled meats are fan favorites. Personally, we love the cocktails here (be sure to try “Lady in Pink”) and the incredible chic ambiance that balances casual dining with a more upscale flair.

Don’t leave without trying the bang-bang butter chicken, one of the restaurant’s signature curry dishes that will leave you craving for more!

3. The Groove

Want to dine upscale? There’s no better place to do so than The Grove. This high-class restaurant boasts elegant contemporary cuisine from the region infused with a delectable French flair. We recommend dressing up—the atmosphere here is pretty sophisticated.

The prices at The Grove aren’t cheap, but no penny is wasted on a meal at this fine establishment. The Grove offers an array of vegetarian options for the non-meat-eaters out there. Be sure to try the tuna tartare while you’re there!

4. Masu by Nic Watt

Auckland’s best location for casual Japanese dining, Masu by Nic Watt combines the elegance of professional cuisine with the ambiance of a day-to-day restaurant. The restaurant’s robata (or fireside) specialties and great drink options make this one of our personal favorites. Masu by Nic Watt offers a world-class sushi bar, along with a smorgasbord of entrees like ika no kara age (fried squid with green chili and lime) and buta kimchi gyoza (pork and kimchi gyoza with soy vinegar and pickled cucumber).

But don’t stop there! We recommend trying out some of the restaurant’s authentic Japanese desserts. We’re sure you’ll love choko no pudyingu (cedar-roasted chocolate and hazelnut pudding with umeshu ice cream) as much as we do!

Best Breakfast in Auckland

0
waffles, ice cream and strawberries on a plate

If you’re visiting Auckland, you’ll want to know the best places you can sink your teeth into. And we’ve got just the list for you. From the best gluten free dishes to the most decadent ‘is this really brekkie?’ best breakfast New Zealand provides.

And, instead of you going on a tiki tour in the wop wops (middle of nowhere), we’ve brought 15 clubs with the best breakfast Auckland has to offer right to your table. Talk about doing all the hard yakka (work) for good breakfast spots. With Auckland being such a breakfast-loving nation, there’s no surprise we’ve got our fair share of cafés, clubs, restaurants, decks, and millennial-style kitchens.

But, of course, it can be hard to keep up. Especially when there’s the ease of Maccas warming our previously eloquent palettes with the Massive McMuffin and Hash Brown dipped in Hot Cake Syrup (we’ve all done it). So, this list gifts all the hottest places featuring the best breakfast Auckland is known for.

That’s why this list ditches the known and the boring for their delicious skuxx (awesome) Kiwi alternative’s.

Here are 15 cafés dishing up the best breakfast Auckland has to offer:

  1. Crave

This Morningside destination has everything from the classically modern (that makes sense) smashed avo on toast to the all-embracing cultural feast of their buttermilk French toast.

What’s the best part that makes this breakfast so delicious? The people and the community that gave way to Crave. The café is built using the foundations of the Morningside community. There’s even a vintage toy store inside you can check-out. So if you are craving an all day breakfast in Auckland, visit the Crave store!

  1. Odette’s Eatery

Odette’s is the place to go for a choice in decadent, over-the-top, and luxurious platters in the morning. With an ever-changing menu to suit the seasons, you know you’ll be served something unique.

For example: the menu shows how bread suddenly becomes the Buckwheat Freedom Loaf by The Midnight Baker. And yoghurt transforms into the somehow affordable Dutch Baby Crème Fraîche, Blueberry Compote, and Rose Sugar dish.

  1. The New Zealand Coffee Company

We better not shout this, but there will of course be the odd kiwi lurking in the bush looking for a not-breakfast-breakfast. So, in an effort to ditch the eggs benedict and smoked salmon meals, the answer is the New Zealand Coffee Company.

While their menu does offer some yummy bites, their passion is in their blend; their coffee blend. So, take a seat, watch their Roastery and sip into an Arabica-induced chill of good and rich flavours. You’re welcome.

However, one thing we do notice when we scour every menu of the best breakfast spots Auckland has to offer is the lack of kiwifruit. For an island of kiwi’s, we like to explore the rest of the rainbow in our breakfast buffets. So, bring your own kiwi!

Best Primary Schools in Auckland, New Zealand

0

If you’re using New Zealand’s ever-improving calculation to find the most suitable schools in the Auckland area, this may just be the article you’ve being looking for.

Finding good or outstanding primary schools where you live and as close to home as possible can be quite difficult. Of course, you want to make sure you send your little one to the primary school that will offer the most in future learning and personal growth as part of their first years of schooling.

Luckily, with New Zealand being top in educational funding, the island of Kiwi’s knows how to decipher the best from the good. In New Zealand, this is done through the use of a decile system. This system calculates data on the amount of students from low-income households as a percentage of the schools whole, and based on that a score is given a decile number from 1 to 10. The higher this decile is, the less financial support needed from the New Zealand government.

However, it must be noted that New Zealand’s Ministry of Education is always seeking to improve the existing systems. And, in recent events, a new education system called the Equity Index has been discussed for implementation in 2022. The aim of this is to improve the New Zealand’s decile system’s ability to calculate which schools may need further funding. These results are used to reduce the amount of children being marginalised by poverty.

New Zealand has a profound reputation as a provider of top notch education for its people. It offers excellent opportunities to their local and international students.

How do we know as parents what the best education looks like? This can be hard to tell. There are several factors that add to what is considered to be the best school for your child, ranging from teaching, environment , culture and its communities, to mention but a few.

The quality of education is in how these factors work together. A great education is not necessarily enough if the school values only part of it. Having a great schooling environment usually will not be be enough if the quality of teaching is poor.

What makes a great school different from one which is not?

A key factor is how a school balances all the various dynamics, such as how teachers interact with students and how much flexibility does individual schools give their teachers. This is key to ensure your child gets the best schooling experience, especially in their early years when they learn and grow their own identity. This early foundation will stay with them throughout their lives, into their university or college years, and into their working careers.

Studies have shown that students who learn through schools in New Zealand with the highest decile rating had higher educational success. Hence, this list of primary schools in the Auckland region comprises only 10th Decile schools.

That said, we’re here to provide you with all the information you need know to make an informed decision for your child. So, here’s 5 more honourable mentions of the top primary schools in the Auckland region with 10th decile ratings:

  1. Beachlands Primary School
  2. Dairy Flat Primary School
  3. Hingaia Peninsula School
  4. Paparimu Primary School
  5. St Thomas School

One from the 8th decile:

Patumahoe School

It takes a lot to make a school great. It take lots of hard work and perseverance from both staff and parents. Two of the factors required for a foundation of a great school is a good leader and a despotic curriculum.

*Research shows that although children start out enthusiastic, intrinsic motivation in academic subjects decreases as children progress through primary school (Perkins, 2009). Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP) also show declining levels of interest in science as students move through the primary school.

The schools accommodate from anywhere between 100 and 2000 students, and are generally well equipped when it comes to technology and are able to provide students with access to computers, internet, and a great variety of different areas when it comes to technology.

Teachers in New Zealand are required by law to be registered with the Education Council of Aotearoa, New Zealand, and hold current certification before they can teach in any school.  This not only ensures that the people teaching your children are eligible to do so, but have the necessary training and qualifications as well.

Types Of Schools In New Zealand

There are 3 types of schools to choose from when looking for the best education for your child:

Public schools which are government owned and funded. This is the largest group of schools in New Zealand, with the majority of children attending these schools. Although public schools are based on being free education, they often rely heavily on parents paying a donation. The amount differs from school to school.

State schools which were former private schools but later integrated into the public school system for funding purposes. These schools are normally based on religious values such as the Catholic faith. These schools currently enroll around 10% of school children.

Private schools which account for about 5% of enrolments, with majority of these schools owned by religious or specialist education groups.

Some public, state, and private schools have single gender schools or are co-ed, with single gender being predominately in senior schools.

We hope this article meets your expectations and helps you find the right school for your family. The Papatoetoe Civic War Memorial was officially opened next to the Papatoetoe Town Hall in St George Street on 8th Oct 1955. The two-storey building housed a public library, a restroom, a concert chamber or memorial hall and the Papatoetoe RSA clubrooms downstairs, with the Papatoetoe Borough offices and Council chambers upstairs. A roll of honour was unveiled in the hall listing men of the Papatoetoe and East Tamaki districts who had died during the two world wars. A further ceremony was held formally dedicating the building as a war memorial on 13th Nov 1955.

In March 1974 the Papatoetoe & Districts RSA moved to a new building in Wallace Road. When a new municipal library was opened next door in December 1978, the new library was designated as the town’s war memorial. The official opening ceremony and service of dedication was held on 26 February 1979. Chrome-plated letters reading ‘Papatoetoe Civic War Memorial’ were transferred from the old library’s entrance to the new library’s eastern wall. The plaque of dedication from the old building was transferred to the new library lobby, and additional plaques were installed. A revised version of the Papatoetoe and East Tamaki roll of honour was installed in the new library (what appears to be the original roll of honour is held by the RSA).

In 2013 the space between the RSA building and the memorial library was revamped. It now incorporates part of an outdoor artwork by Regan Gentry entitled ‘Learning Your Stripes’. The artist has enlivened the walls of the RSA building with coloured aluminium stripes representing the war medal ribbons, while the trunk of a nearby totara tree is outlined by curved benches painted in a bright poppy red.

The correct name of the Papatoetoe library, now a branch of Auckland Libraries, is thus the Papatoetoe War Memorial Library.
